Approximately, how many jobs have you handled? Describe one that has left a lasting impression on you.
Thousands. I have a funny story that sticks out the most working for my father in the early years, when I was in my second year of drain cleaning I was 20. Im now 60. I was snaking a
main sewer clog under an apartment building. I ran the cable from the end of the
building back to the rear unit cleared the line and decided to snake out the rest of
the line just a little bit further to be certain I got the clog cleared. I hit another really
hard spot it cleared past that spot so I pulled the cable back out. It was very hard to
pull it out so I thought I was pulling back a lot of roots stuck on the cable. To my
surprise out came a sheet of heavy plastic with a flower design on it. After twisting and pulling the plastic off it unraveled into what was a shower curtain. I thought how the heck did a shower curtain get in to the drain? I was really glad for the moment that I gave it the extra effort and snaked out the drain the extra ten feet or so.
I walked over to all four downstairs units to have the tenants flush their toilets and run
water to be sure the line was flowing good and let them know I was done. When I
walked up to the last end unit the little old lady asked me to come in and see her
toilet. I walked into the little bathroom and noticed a curtain rod with the curtain
hooks still attached a large hole in the bottom of the toilet. I immediately realized
what had happened. My cable somehow broke through the base of the toilet, and
flopped around to the edge of the bathtub, coiled up into the curtain. She explained
how she heard a loud banging noise in the bathroom and walked to the bathroom
doorway to see this thing brake out from the side of the toilet reaching and coiling
up the shower curtain, snatching it from the curtain rod hooks and then took it away
down the hole from which it came from. I was in shock and told her I would be
right back with a new toilet and curtain. She very calmly walked back to her couch
and sat down to watch TV.
I learned more from that one single job in an hour than I was ever taught at that
point about drain cleaning. I was so thankful after returning with a new toilet and
shower curtain the tenant was in good spirits and we actually laughed about the
situation. After I replaced the toilet and shower curtain, cleaned up the mess I
returned to the shop and explained what happened to my dad and the rest of the
guys that were there.
